Before you bring your vehicle into Extreme Tint, it's crucial to understand Minnesota's window tinting laws. Law enforcement actively tickets for illegal tint, and we want to ensure you get a look you love that won't result in getting pulled over.

The 50% Rule for Passenger Cars

In Minnesota, the law states that passenger vehicles (sedans, coupes) must allow at least 50% of light to pass through all side and rear windows. This is known as VLT (Visible Light Transmission). A 50% VLT tint is a relatively light shade.

SUVs, Trucks, and Vans

The rules are slightly different for SUVs, trucks, and vans (classified as multi-purpose vehicles). For these vehicles:

• Front side windows: Must allow 50% light transmission.
• Rear side windows: Any darkness is allowed.
• Rear windshield: Any darkness is allowed.

Windshield Tinting

Minnesota law prohibits tinting the entire windshield. However, you are allowed to have a strip of tint at the top of the windshield, provided it does not extend below the AS-1 line from the manufacturer.

Note: We do offer clear ceramic films for the entire windshield that block UV and heat without darkening the glass, which is a massive upgrade for driving comfort.

Medical Exemptions

If you have a medical condition that requires protection from sunlight (like lupus, melanoma, or severe photosensitivity), you can get a prescription from a licensed physician allowing you to have darker tint. You must carry this prescription in the vehicle at all times.
